The Flow: A Public Space Design Inspired by Water

Creating a Serene and Reflective Atmosphere

The Flow, designed by Peng-Hsu Chen of Aesthetic of Space Design Co., Ltd., is a unique public space that draws inspiration from the movement and tranquility of water. Located in Taipei City, Taiwan, this design aims to create a serene and reflective atmosphere for visitors.

The concept behind The Flow is based on the idea of water as a metaphor for time and traffic. The design incorporates elements that evoke the transparency and movement of flowing water, creating a visually captivating experience for visitors.

One of the standout features of The Flow is the wood grill ceiling, which is designed with curved wavy three-dimensional shapes. This ceiling mimics the flow of water, guiding visitors from the main entrance all the way to the reception desk, lounge, mailroom, and even the underground parking area. The use of wood adds a touch of warmth and natural beauty to the space.

In addition to the wood grill ceiling, ripples-looked stainless corrugated panels are used on the side walls and ceiling of the elevator hall from the second floor and above. These panels further enhance the portrayal of moving water, adding depth and visual interest to the design.

The Flow also incorporates reflective finished walls in the social area, visually widening the space and creating a sense of openness. White marble effect ceramic wall tiles are used at the reception, basement transition zone, and elevator hall, giving a sense of extension and elegance.

Environmental sustainability was a key consideration in the design process. The use of wood and stainless steel, both recyclable materials, aligns with the concept of water as a recyclable resource. The designer also chose light-colored walls to reduce energy consumption by requiring less interior lighting. Locally designed and produced tiles were used throughout the space to minimize the carbon footprint.

Overcoming the challenges posed by the building's width limitation, the designer utilized large panels of fire-rated glass windows and doors. This not only elongated the space but also allowed for enhanced security, as reception staff can oversee the driveway.

The Flow has been recognized for its outstanding design and creativity. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2023. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to quality of life improvements and making the world a better place.

The Flow is a testament to the power of design to create unique and captivating spaces. With its inspiration from water and its commitment to sustainability, this public space offers visitors a serene and reflective environment in the heart of Taipei City.
